Here's what we were working with - an outdated shower with beige square tiles, brass framed sliding doors, and that classic 90s look that a lot of older homes in Mountain View still have. Functional, sure. But far from anything the homeowner was excited to step into every morning. They came to us with a clear vision: they wanted something that felt like Maui - a special vacation destination for their family who have made countless memories there. Our job was to make that happen.
We stripped it all the way down to the studs. Bare framing, exposed plumbing, fresh subfloor - that's where every solid remodel starts. No shortcuts. When you gut it properly, you know exactly what you're building on, and you can make sure waterproofing and substrate work are done right before a single tile goes up.
The tile selection is really what drives the whole Maui feel here. We used a soft seafoam-blue glazed subway tile from floor to ceiling on the walls - the kind of tile that shifts color slightly depending on the light, almost like ocean water. Running through the middle of the walls is a band of natural pebble tile in earthy browns, tans, and greens. That same pebble tile carries down to the shower floor, which gives it a real tropical, organic feel underfoot. We also built in a recessed niche lined with pebble tile to tie everything together.
The frameless glass enclosure was a big part of this too. Getting rid of that old brass sliding track and replacing it with a clean, frameless hinged glass door opens the whole space up visually. The brushed brass hardware throughout - shower handles, shower head, valve trim - keeps it looking cohesive and elegant. New flooring outside the shower, the color of sand, and a fresh toilet rounded out the full bathroom update.
This is the kind of remodel where every material choice was intentional. The blue tile, the river pebbles, the frameless glass - none of it was random. It all points back to one destination. If you've been sitting on a bathroom refresh and you actually have a style in mind, that's the best place to start. A clear direction makes everything easier to execute well. Which is why we start every bathroom remodel by pairing our customers with one of our designers.
